Rudolf Holtappel

Pictorial Ethnography

1959–1971

The photographs of Rudolf Holtappel were marked by a journalistic ethnographic interest in the surrounding world of the Ruhr. “Questions of style and composition” were secondary. This is reversed, in specific ways, in the pictures of Bernd and Hilla Becher, Joachim Brohm and Jitka Hanzlová. Compared to the “what”, the “how” comes to the fore.
